P1 BODY TO SPACE / October 15th – December 10th / 8 wks.

INQUIRY:
How do we move through, read, and respond to the environment (context) around us? What are the (visible + invisible) 'boundaries' or thresholds within the built and unbuilt environment? What might be the strategies, the layers, fragments, and subsystems, effective in understanding and framing the processes embedded within space? How do we translate tactile, embodied experiences of space in or on the framework of a map? How can we engage and potentially activate or reveal the latencies within a chosen context? How can an intervention of discreet elements or processes within a context transform its associations? Can we enact new understandings of the context through bridging, linking, thresholding and/or sequencing? How much can the introduction of a threshold intervention (individual or series) affect our inhabitation? How/When do we detect and/or engage those interventions? To what degree it is visible? Should the intervention be a permanent assembly or a temporary one?
INTENT:
The riverside of Whittier Park and the Waterfront area near Alexander Docks were the focal points of design. Through exploration, research and investigation of the area, the needs and desires of the potential user and the conditions of the site were determined.
In Whittier Park, the steep fall to the river is contrasted with the gradual transition on the waterfront side. There is no means to get across the river from the active exchange to the Whittier. After conducting research and several iterations, the pedestrian bridge inspired by a sweetgrass braid was created (this also honours the MMIW).
The design incorporated 3 paths that are unravelling from the braid. All paths converge at one point before scattering to separate focus points.
They aid in the separation of the public and private domains, resulting in a more intimate experience.
The design's thresholds are clear and they impact the user's experience in this environment. The form and related places on the bridge strengthen the transition between those elements.
And the experience of crossing the bridge is choreographed by changes in thresholds.
The thresholds generate a range of contrasts, such as open and confined areas, public and intimate spaces, urban and nature, water levels and path heights, all of which can combine to form a single moment that intensifies environmental - spatial awareness and defines the space.

Design inspired by sweetgrass braid
Individuals can be at various levels on essentially every area of the bridge, resulting in a diversity of viewpoints. This connects the user to the beauty of nature, enhancing their curiosity and encouraging exploration.

Iterations
The bridge's spiral/wavy form allows for a dynamic transition from being on the river in open space to being among the trees in closed space. The bridge design adapts to the terrain. Like the red river, it twists, flows, rises and falls, balancing the topography of the area's surroundings.
