P4.2 FROM ROUTINE TO DWELLING

INQUIRY:
[relationship-action/routine]
What are ‘meaningful relationships’ of today/tomorrow? How can we understand our living beyond its functional framework? How can we understand/conceive dwelling as an action, not as an object? What are the critical elements and parameters of the enacted relationship? What/How are the changing and emerging ‘acts’ or ‘routines’ in the present/post pandemic world? [relationship-resource] How do we consider space / program / materiality as a set of resources requiring conservation? How do quality and quantity of space relate to each other? How can we maximize the quality of a spatial experience rather than the quantity?

How do we consider the relationship to a contextual environment in the production of dwelling? What are the environmental conditions that inform instances of dwelling between interior and exterior?
[relationship-other/collective]
What are the ways we might imagine a new prototype of living with others? How can the re-conceptualized approach to dwelling contribute to a renewed attention to urbanity? How can we live together again?
STATEMENT OF INTENT:
The project aims to imagine a new living prototype within the urban elm canopy of Winnipeg. The site is located beside 2 Avonherst, in Crestwood, a community developed in the early 1900. understanding some of the history and present amenities provided the foundation for the project since it provided insight into the type of contextual relationship the dwelling could have with its surrounding areas. on the North-west side of the site is a traditional early-century house with a raised front entry and many levels and peaks that the building is made of. The southeast side of the lot is a simplistic modern building. In addition to this, there is also a park across the streets from the site. In order to ground the dwelling on the site a modern shape was chosen and traditional building materials were used to merge the two styles. The idea of living together and incorporating community spaces throughout the dwelling largely influenced this project. O the ground level, this space is given almost completely back to the surrounding community with sculpture gardens, a fireplace and a workspace available to rent. This creates a co-working area and invites people from neighbouring buildings and parks to use the space collectively. As one goes up the step toward the second level of the building they are entering a semi-private area aimed to be shared by 6 female creatives. The second level includes shared eating, lounging, bathing and outside space. It also houses private sleeping areas for individuals. In a time when so many people have been isolated to live by themselves, this project looks toward a new approach and understanding of urbanity.

The project was influenced by Lina Bo Bardi, Le Corbusier and the Five Points of Modern Architecture in Contemporary Projects:
1. Pilotis or column design - free the ground floor for circulation of people - the access to the sculpture garden from community members and people passing by.
2. Free design of the ground plan is done by creating an open plan, to allow for more flexibility inside.
3. Free design of the facade allows for more freedom in windows and openings.
4. Horizontal windows that cut through the entire length of the building's facade.
The dwelling uses clerestory windows as well and tall windows 36” above floor level that span across multiple facades.
